چکیده

We present a systematic in situ study of the effect of postdeposition low-energy s200 eVd ion bombardment on resistance and surface topography of ultrathin iron s,50 Åd and copper s,130 Åd films. The ion-beam-induced nanosmoothening occurs while material is being removed and gives rise to an initial decrease in resistance followed by a steady increase as the film is subsequently uniformly eroded. The shunt resistance associated with the resistance decrease is found to be independent of the thickness of the underlying film, thus indicating that the conductivity enhancement is due primarily to surface modification. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. fDOI: 10.1063/1.1861953g

Thickness-Induced Metal-Insulator Transition in Sb-doped SnO2 Ultrathin Films: The Role of Quantum Confinement

A thickness induced metal-insulator transition (MIT) was firstly observed in Sb-doped SnO2 (SnO2:Sb) epitaxial ultrathin films deposited on sapphire substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Both electrical and spectroscopic studies provide clear evidence of a critical thickness for the metallic conductivity in SnO2:Sb thin films and the oxidation state transition of the impurity element Sb. With ...

Ultrathin free-standing close-packed gold nanoparticle films: conductivity and Raman scattering enhancement.

A simple filtration technique was developed to prepare large scale free-standing close-packed gold nanoparticle ultrathin films using metal hydroxide nanostrands as both barrier layer and sacrificial layer. As thin as 70 nm, centimeter scale robust free-standing gold nanoparticle thin film was obtained. The thickness of the films could be easily tuned by the filtration volumes. The electronic c...

Ultrathin oxide films on metals: new physics and new chemistry?

Oxide thin films on metals are now currently used as model systems to study the surface properties of highly insulating oxides by means of electron spectroscopies. However, it has been recently proposed that ultrathin oxide films and oxide–metal interfaces may actually have unprecedented intrinsic chemical–physical properties, because of image potential screening of charge fluctuations and inte...

Irradiation induced electrical conductivity in polymeric thin films

Scientific objectives of this project are: (1) To produce and characterise uniaxially charge conducting ion tracks in thin polymeric films with high energy ion beam irradiation. (2) To understand the charge transport mechanisms within and as well as across ion tracks, which have been identified and shown to occur via electron transport across the carbon clusters that were formed within these io...

Band Bending in Mg-Colored and O2‐Activated Ultrathin MgO(001) Films

Ultrathin MgO films grown on Ag(001) have been investigated using X-ray and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopies for oxide films successively exposed to Mg and O2 flux. Studying work functions and layer-resolved Auger shifts allows us to keep track of band profiles from the oxide surface to the interface and reveal the charge-transfer mechanisms underlying the controlled creation of Mg-indu...
